He speaks!! “The Howdy Doody Show” was a long-running kids’ program featuring Howdy, his live buddy, Buffalo Bob Smith and many others with the most popular being Clarabelle. Clarabelle had two distinct characteristics; he carried a seltzer bottle that he used liberally on Buffalo Bob, and he couldn’t speak so he used a horn mounted to a little box tied to his belt. He could only respond to Yes/No questions by honking the horn. On this day, 1960, we got the last broadcast of Howdy Doody. Buffalo Bob was standing there with Clarabelle and said, “If you’ve got anything to say, now is the time because there won’t be a tomorrow.” The camera moved in on Clarabelle and he said, “Goodbye, kids.” There were three guys that played Clarabelle, most notable being Bob Keeshan (B&W photo) who later was Captain Kangaroo. Lew Anderson was the one who got those big lines at the end.
