He suddenly realised she had been watching him; he figured she must have been there for a while, seeing as she stood like a supervisor of his existence, with hands across her chest, eyes unblinking. Before he looked up to see her, his head had been bent, eyes fixed on the pile of examination scripts he had been grading. Then, on feeling he was being watched, he had raised his head and seen she was there, right in his office. He wondered fleetingly how she had managed to get past the door without his notice; he wondered again how long she had been watching him. He realized that, in seeing her, he beheld something past - a memory he would rather forget. Even when he stood, matching her height with his, but avoiding her gaze, he was unable to comprehend how it was that he felt taken-hold-of, smeared with irreversibikity of previous years.
