He was an uncle down the line as I know it; this answers questions - TopicsExpress

He was an uncle down the line as I know it; this answers questions Ive always had about how did the family get to Spring Creek and were always Baptists, etc. finding this article really filled in some blank spots for me; Wilma Mankiller, knew this when I first worked for her, as she was so well read on Cherokee history; I tried to impress her, telling her I was a descendant of this Chief and her response was quick and certain, she said, yes, well you know he was a womanizer.........which in fact I didnt know at that time, but it humbled me pretty quick and Im sure thats why she said it to me. Wilma was as disarming as she was charming and that spoke a lot about her personality and sharp mind. Ive said it many times, but working for her then, when she was in her last term as Chief, was one of the great joys in my life and the people and friends I made then have been life long since. I can say in all candor that working for the people was not just a cliche among us; it was our passion and those who didnt feel that way didnt last long; the work required more than just showing up and doing the job, it required a drive and belief, that what we did really did benefit the members of the Tribe, regardless of their economic status though we did do all we could with the resources we had to help those in most need.
