Head shells! A massive variable which cant be taken lightly. - TopicsExpress

Head shells! A massive variable which cant be taken lightly. Having lived with wooden arms for quite sometime, I must have become accustomed to the very natural sound they produce. The majority of my testing has been with the Zupreme head shell which is very similar to the HS 12 magnesium alloy unit from Jelco. I have found that it most certainly adds its own character through the music, one which I find quite different from the easy organic nature of wood! Wood is good :) Well I did a little experiment today and manufactured a nice 15g Cocobolo head shell. It took 3 secs after the needle to hit the vinyl that wooden head shells are my cup of tea. Im sure Graphite and slate would be good too. Id also be interested to hear some expensive Skelton systems floating around at the moment. Id recommend keep away from the cheap Zupreme and Jelco units unless you need a boast of treble energy which will open your sound stage up and give you more air at the expense of naturalness. Has anyone else found this? I guess its also a matter of personal taste.
