Heading back to childrens books for todays Saturday book - TopicsExpress

Heading back to childrens books for todays Saturday book recommendation... I just finished this marvelous book by Jack Gantos earlier this week, and I cant stop thinking about it. Its written in the first person, narrated by Joey Pigza, a 4th or 5th grader (not sure which) who has pretty severe ADHD. What struck me about this book was how well Gantos expressed what was going on in Joeys head. I dont have ADHD, but I know people who do, and for the first time I felt like I kind of got it. Joeys a great kid, but he makes poor choices, mostly because its neurologically impossible for him to pay attention or follow through on a thought process. I think this is a terrific book to read with a child--theres no way you can read it without feeling empathy in the true sense of the word. And its funny. Its crazy funny. The official blurb sums it up better than I can: In this antic yet poignant new novel, Jack Gantos has perfect pitch in capturing the humor, the off-the-wall intensity, and the serious challenges that life presents to a kid dealing with hyper-activity and related disorders.
