Heading to SOFA Chicago with these tenets in mind: 1). We are not trying to displace studio glass. rather, think of each as a circle with overlapping areas. 2). By seceding, we are not saying we do not like or honor studio glass. We are simply saying new forms and intentions are evolving and we want to focus primarily on those. 3). We tend to focus on realistic narrative and conceptual work, with full knowledge of its roots in studio glass. We do not focus on vessels. 4). It is modeled after Alfred Steiglitz and the Photo-Secessionists. 5). We seek to support a longer view of where glass is headed—where the identity of glass may be intermingled with the larger world of contemporary art. 6). Glass tends to be only one component in a mixed media sculpture. 7). It tends to start with an idea or concept rather than perfecting or exploring a technique. 8). Much of our message is in how social media will define this movement, will effect the way we view glass and art in general, and share ideas globally and quickly. 9). We plan to explore how SG and GS artworks can be paired in a collection, to benefit both and enhance the aesthetic presentation of your collection.
