Headline is misleading although the situation is fraught with danger. The region at risk is the Blue Mountains, about 100km west of Sydney. The area is mostly national park with some iconic townships perched on ridgetops along crossed by a rail line and two major roads. The surrouding valleys are deep, heavily forested in places and mostly inaccessible to vehicles and most aircraft other than small helicopters. Given hot, dry weather and strong winds, a fire in these hills - once it takes hold - is all but impossible to contain. The city of Sydney itself is not at risk from this fire, although there are major national parks on and near the coast to the north and south of Sydney.
