Heads or tails; which is it? Leadership is like a coin with two sides. On one side is the technical stuff such as strategy, planning, budgeting and execution. On the other side is the relationship stuff, which requires that you communicate, connect, cast a vision, and motivate people to believe they can achieve if they work together. The art of leadership is the ability to balance both sides of the coin well. The challenge of leadership is to acknowledge when you are stronger on one side than you are on the other, and knowing what to do to strike the optimum balance. If you are stronger on one side than you are on the other, the secret is to invest in self-development. Read books, take courses, and seek wise counsel. Then, bring people along side of you who possess skills that compliment, rather than duplicate, your skills. The best leaders know that it is not a question of heads or tails; but rather, heads and tails!
