Heads up Floridians. If youre wondering why No On Amendment 2 succeeded, then take a look 2000 miles away to Las Vegas billionare Sheldon Adelson. He donated more than $4,000,000 to lobby against it. My immediate question is why is this guy, so far away against something thats not even affecting his state. Does he loathe marijuana that much? The answer is no. Adelson and his wife are major donors to a medical research facility in Tel Aviv that supports the use of marijuana to treat a number of diseases. Moreover, marijuana related initiatives are on the ballot in Oregon, Alaska, and now Washington, DC. So why is Adelson only donating to defeat marijuana in Florida? Consider the fact that Adelsons casino company, the Las Vegas Sands Corporation, has desperately sought entry into Floridas lucrative table games market, which is currently controlled only by the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Adelsons Sands Corp has lobbied furiously to build its own Vegas-style casino in Florida, but has so far come up short. The deal with the Seminoles expires next year, meaning whoever controls the governors office has a great deal of sway over the decision. I can hear the slot machines now...
