Heads-up folks! A bit of a warning to any/all friends who might not be all that computer savvy... I just received a phone call. I answered and a recording told me that my computer has been creating errors and malicious traffic on the Internet. I was directed to press 1 now to speak to a certified Microsoft System Engineer. I was amused, as Ive years of experience in the computer security field... and as I dont happen to be running any Microsoft products... and if my computer were spewing errors such that someone needed to call me, I would expect my Internet service provider to be the one calling, not some random Microsoft Certified System Engineer not identified with any particular business entity. So I pressed 1 and was greeted by a man with an Indian accent. I asked him a couple of simple questions about who he was with and how my computer was identified. He quickly hung up on me. If Id played along better hed have likely asked me for me password, directed me to malicious web site or otherwise attempted to compromise my computer such that it would indeed begin sending malicious traffic.
