Heads up for all my North Florida followers.......we are headed into some wacky temperature changes the next 7 days. We will see a 30 degree drop tonight then cooler days and nights for the weekend, then back up to 77 on Monday with a possible freeze by Wednesday morning. Please pay attention to your horses water consumption over the next week. These wild swings in temps set our horses up for colic. Pay special attention to the older seniors and be sure you are feeding enough hay, especially in the overnight hours. Consider wetting their meals with warm water and add 1 TB. of salt to each meal. A great way to get extra water into them is by soaking hay cubes in warm water. On cold nights, I often give a bedtime snack of soaked cubes around 10:00 pm. I also top off water buckets with hot water. If you are in an area that might freeze, be sure to turn off the water in your barn and drain all hoses.
