Heads up this is a long read but has a lot of thought behind it. Okay, the 53 has been picked and tweaked once. What do you think? They just cut Grossman, Johnson, Wallace, and Karim Barton( the guy they signed after cut day). The new Browns are WR LaRon Byrd, T Caylin Hauptmann, G Ryan Seymour, and RB Glenn Winston. These are my position thoughts: QB - Hoyer and JFF - If they stay healthy, they could be the most interesting 1 and 2 since the return RB - Tate, West, Crowell, and Winston - on paper this could be the best backfield ever. Tate is young with a chip on his shoulder and runs hard, West runs hard but just needs time, Crowell may be the best of the bunch, he has a lot to prove after a sketchy past, but he has his priorities in the right place. He runs down hill and can take it to the house at any time, also he isnt afraid to lay out a would be tackler. He reminds me of Steven Jackson when he was relevant. Winston has a shady past also, but is a big, strong kid and runs violently. These guys as a group will beat a defense down. Also FB Ray Agnew is not afraid to punish who is in front of him and also has soft hands for receiving. WR - Everyone calm down about these guys. There is some intriguing guys here. Austin is smart and healthy and knows how to get open. Hawkins, Benjamin, and Gabriel will give secondaries fits trying to keep up with them. All have breakaway speed. I dont know a lot about Byrd except that he is a big target at 64 and has decent hands TE - Cameron if healthy top 5 TE in league. Barnidge and Dray are both serviceable in catching and blocking OL - This is the one spot on the team that has me a little worried. I thought they would be a strength but they had a tough time this preseason learning a new blocking scheme. Hopefully they will figure it out. Im a little worried about the depth right now. McQuistan is okay but nothing special. Seymour was very effective this preseason only giving up 3 pressures for the 49ers, but will it translate when it is for real. Hauptmann was with us last year on our PS and was poached by Seattle. He is untested, but has promise and Seattle ran a similar blocking scheme to ours. Not having a backup center is a little worrisome. If Mack gets hurt, they become weak at 2 positions because Greco would be the backup center and one of the backups would need to fill his position. All in all, I feel that the offense is going in the right direction as far as talent wise and may surprise teams once it is for real. D-line - Solid, they will wreck havoc with other teams. If the CBs can play man up on the corners, this line will get a lot of pressures and sacks. Armonty looks like a diamond and once Desmond is ready to go, the Bryants will take up residence in opponents backfields. Rubin, Winn, Hughes, Kitchen and Phil are all part of a solid rotation. LB - Kruger looks a little lighter and quicker than last year. Mingo is poised to have a breakout year. Sheard is an enigma. He was supposed to be the breakout player, but had a quiet preseason, hopefully it was an anomaly and he will be fine. Dansby will kick ass and lead by example. Kirksey looks like a player and Robertson even looked better this preseason. Carder and Martin are mainly special teamers S - Gipson with a year under his belt will be better. Whitner will be an intimidating player in run support and over the middle, but I worry about him in deep coverage, hopefully he wont be asked to do a lot. Leonhard, Poyer, and Bademosi are all special team demons. CB - Haden, Skrine, and Gilbert should be the first 3 out. Haden can lock down with the best of them. Skrine and Gilbert need to match Hadens intensity on the field because most teams will not test Haden a lot. A lot of people were down on Gilbert during the preseason, but this kid has legitimate DROY type skills. Berry is a scrappy, gritty player that isnt afraid to mix it up and Desir, Williams, and Nelson are all good looking young players that need a little seasoning but could all be decent if called on. The prognosis: The sky is the limit. These guys could be very good if they play to their abilities. Guessing wins/losses will be hard, because I have not seen the whole scheme yet for Offense or Defense, but Im going to paint with a large brush and say 6-10 to 10-6 depending on health. I can see a better more balanced team then last year. This team may not be done wheeling and dealing yet, but I will be ready to cheer on the final product starting with the Stoolers on Sunday at McKenzie. Go Browns.
