Healing on the Sabbath Luke 14:3 “And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?” Jesus was obviously invited to eat a meal in the house of a prominent Pharisee on a certain Sabbath Day. Present was a man that had a disease called the dropsy. This was a condition that caused excess fluid in the body tissues maybe from cancer or maybe liver or kidney problems. It is possible that the man was invited into the Pharisees house to see what the Lord would do. Because of the questionable interpretation of Jewish law Jesus forwarded the question, “Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?” This disarmed the crowd concerning the false interpretation that is was wrong to help someone in need on the Sabbath. I fully agree that it is wrong to purposely work on God’s day and forsake the Lord’s work. God said that one day a week should be set apart for spiritual refreshment and carnal rest. Yet, there is a wisdom and love factor to the law. Today we observe Sunday as the Lord’s Day. Every effort ought to be made to observe it in the strictest sense. Obviously you cannot close the hospitals, nursing homes, health care facilities, police departments, etc on the Lord’s Day but certain principles can be observed. 1. Do not do any carnal work you do not have to do on the Lord’s Day 2. If you have to work try to schedule it so you can at least make one church service. 3. Take the Lord’s Day very seriously. 4. Do your shopping on another day 5. Accomplish your secular work in six days like God said. 6. Keep a good attitude and prayerful spirit as you attend church 7.
