Health Report: Diabetes Diabetes is a chronic condition in which the levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood are too high. Blood glucose levels are normally regulated by the hormone insulin, which is made by the pancreas. Diabetes occurs when there is a problem with this hormone and how it works in the body. Types of Diabetes: The 2 main types of Diabetes are Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 diabetes: Approximately 10% of Australians with diabetes has Type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is caused by an autoimmune destruction of insulin-making cells in the pancreas, which means insulin is no longer made by the body. There is no cure for Type 1 diabetes at this stage however, it can be well managed with insulin injections (or more recently, the insulin pump), a good diet and regular exercise. Type 2 diabetes: Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. It is considered a lifestyle disease because it is more common in people who dont do enough physical activity and are overweight or obese. It is strongly associated with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and an apple body shape, where excess weight is carried around the waist. Around 90% of all Australians who have diabetes have this type. The difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics lies with insulin production. Type 1 diabetics make NO insulin however Type 2 people do. It is just made erratically and / or the insulin made is not very effective in bringing down blood sugar levels. The other big difference is that Type 2 diabetes can be reversed in some people with weight loss / exercise and lifestyle changes. Ultimately, at the end of the day both types of diabetics need to keep their blood sugar levels under control as much as possible. A non-diabetic normal blood sugar level is between 4-6: a diabetic should aim to keep their sugars in this range as much as possible to avoid the complications associated with chronic poor control of blood sugar levels. Consistently high blood sugar levels will lead to many unpleasant side-effects including: Kidney damage (nephropathy) Eye damage (retinopathy) Nerve damage to the feet and other parts of the body (neuropathy) Heart disease (for example, angina or heart attacks), strokes and circulation problems in the legs Foot ulcers or infections resulting from circulation problems and nerve damage.
