Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has announced that a new scheme is to be introduced next year to monitor failing care homes, in the same way that failing hospitals have been under review recently. The system, which is similar to the one used to assess the performance of schools, gives the care services a rating of outstanding, good, requires improvement or inadequate. It has been introduced at 11 failing trusts so far and most have made positive differences but only five have been taken out of special measures. Hunt claims that the Stafford Hospital scandal brought the need for better standards of care to the forefront and “by being open about failings, the health and care sector could be held to account better”.
