Health and Safety at Work Act HASAWA is 40 years old tomorrow. It covered all workers in all workplaces. Watch out for Coalition spokespeople praising HASAWA tomorrow while actually working hard to destroy the universality of the Act. Coalition deregulation and slashing HSE/LA enforcement has already created a two tier workforce with banning proactive inspections in falsely called low risk workplaces. Most workplaces are now classified l;ow risk but 53%of HSEs official death toll occurs and where work-related ill-health- stress, MSDs, violence and asbestos exposure- is at epidemic levels. Now via Deregulation Bil, government planning to exempt all self -employed from HASAWA unless they are on short and very confusing prescribed list that creates grey areas and loopholes.
