Health care consultant Avalere released an analysis last week that projects exchange enrollment nationwide will finish at 5.4 million at the end of March, when enrollment is set to end. The number falls short of Obama administration projections last year and the most recent Congressional Budget Office estimates of 6 million. The administration announced last week that 4.2 million individuals had signed up for coverage through the exchanges through February. Considering the near-disastrous rollout of the federal health exchange website in October, the numbers could be viewed as a significant recovery for the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). But the numbers have added fuel to the political fire, which was fully on view when U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius testified before the House Ways and Means Committee last week. By week’s end, President Obama weighed in and said he thinks the marketplaces now have sufficient enrollment to be successful going forward. Sebelius also told committee members that the administration would not extend the deadline for people to sign up for coverage or delay the individual mandate requirements.
