Health checks to save hundreds of lives Hundreds of lives could be saved by health checks, UK health secretary Jeremy Hunt claimed this week while promoting the NHS Health Check programme. The programme aims to screen everyone in England between the age of 40 and 74 who has not already been diagnosed with heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease or certain types of dementia every five years. It is believed that checking blood pressure, cholesterol, weight and lifestyle alone could dramatically cut rates of diabetes and heart disease. Costa Blanca GP Dr NajmaHussain, from Medcare, welcomed the move and urged everyone eligible to take advantage of the programme. “Well-person health checks are the best way to prevent disease and to make early, possibly life-saving diagnoses,” she said. Medcare has long promoted regular health checks and offers a range of checks at its clinics in Benijofar and Alfazdel Pi. The Medcare checks include a medical history review, a full examination bya GP and extensive blood tests to screen for conditions such as liver and kidney disease, anaemia, infection, high cholesterol, diabetes and thyroid problems.Women are offered a cervical smear test and men screened for prostate cancer. “Even if you feel healthy you don’t always knowwhat is going on in inside your body,” said Dr Hussain. “So we recommend people should consider having a health check once a year.” Medcare health checks have uncovered potentially fatal diseases in many patients who have then been able to receive life-saving early treatment.
