Health tip of the week..... Dont ever want to run a marathon? ... thats fine, but you still need to invest in your health! A stroke refers to rapidly developing loss of brain function, due to interruption of the blood supply to the brain. This can be caused by a blockage (thrombosis or blood clot) or haemorrhage (leakage of blood) and results in the affected area of the brain being unable to function effectively. Common symptoms include facial weakness, an inability to move limbs on one side of the body and an inability to understand or formulate speech. High blood pressure damages blood vessels throughout the body, making them more susceptible to developing clots. Just 30 minutes a day of exercise strenuous enough to get your heart beating faster can improve the overall health of your blood vessels, helping to reduce your risk of stroke by 20%. Exercise harder and watch the risk drop a further 7%. Heres a great reason to pack a banana with your lunch; theyre loaded with potassium. Research shows that eating a diet low in potassium (less than 1.5 grams a day) increases stroke risk by 28%. It was found that consuming nine daily servings of potassium-rich fruits and vegetables lowered stroke risk by 38%, compared to people who ate just four servings daily. Other great sources include apricots, raisins, baked potato skins, spinach and lentils.
