Health workers begin strike tomorrow The Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP), which consist of pharmacists, medical technologists and professionals, allied to medicine, has announced its decision to embark on a nationwide strike from tomorrow, as a result of the discrimination against the association by the Federal Government in favour of members of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA). Addressing the press at the University College Teaching Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, the national president of the association, Felix Olukayode, said the decision by the association to embark on strike was due to the negligence of theMinister of Health on the association and lamented that the health sector had not known peace for a long time. “He has demonstrated that he is a nominee of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and not a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, having been partisan and outright discriminatory of all other health professionals in favour of members of his professional constituency, from beginning till date.” He lamented that in December 2010, Professor Chukwu, unilaterally issued an internal memo that robbed other health professionals of the benefits they had been enjoying since early 80s such as teaching and rural posting allowances, promotion Grade Level 09 to 11, consultancy status and non- payment of specialists and among others. Olukayode stressed that the demands of the association must be met, before they could call of fthe strike action which include; that the members should also be eligible to be appointed as CMDS, the need to abolish the post of deputy Chairman advisory committee being illegally created, new call duty allowance rate and need to release circulars on concluded collective bargained agreements ,namely; retirement age extension/adjustment of salary and allowances, creation of a separate department for medical laboratory scientist g other demands.
