Healthwatch Devon Overhaul of NHS Complaints - TopicsExpress

Healthwatch Devon Overhaul of NHS Complaints welcomed Healthwatch Devon has praised a new report calling for a major overhaul in NHS’ handling of complaints. The national report, ‘Putting patients back in the picture’ was prompted by Prime Minister David Cameron in response to the serious failings of a Mid Staffordshire hospital. The reasons why individuals complain can be many and varied. They include lack of information about care and treatment, feeling neglected and staff attitudes. Unfortunately, the report has highlighted that individuals have faced many problems when thinking about, or trying to make a complaint. Anna Bradley, Chair of Healthwatch England, said “People simply don’t know where to go if they have a problem. They just want their complaints dealt with quickly, efficiently and to see that it has made some practical difference for the future. However, this report is another indication of how far there is still to go before people get the complaints system they deserve”. Healthwatch Devon wants all members of the public to know their rights and know where to go if they have a concern or complaint to make. Miles Sibley, Executive Director, said, “The health and social care system is complex – it’s no wonder that individuals can feel a little lost as to where to take their complaint. Healthwatch Devon can help you make your complaint to the appropriate person or team. We are also really interested to hear how your complaint goes. Was it handled well? Or was there a lack of information or responsiveness from the body you complained to?” You can ‘Speak Out’ about your experiences by calling Healthwatch Devon on 0800 520 0640 or email [email protected] All enquiries are dealt with confidentially and can also be taken anonymously if you prefer.
