Healthy Highlight: Manganese Brown rice (and other whole grain) touts a high concentration of manganese but WHAT IS MAGANESE and WHY do we need it? Manganese is an essential mineral that our bodies need daily. It is involved in bone formation, thyroid function, formation of connective tissues, hormone function, calcium absorption, blood sugar regulation, immune function and in fat and carbohydrate metabolism. Fortunate for us, manganese is abundant in fresh fruits, vegetables, grains & nuts. Specifically, brown rice, oat bran, pineapple, garbanzo beans, spinach, spelt, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. The general guideline is that 5mg a day is enough. And since the mineral is so abundant in normal food, there should be no need for a supplement!
