“Hear, O Israel! Yahweh is our God, the LORD is one! You shall love Yahweh, your God, with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. – Deuteronomy 6:4-8 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. – Ephesians 6:4 I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. 2 Timothy 1:5 God’s people have always been commanded to raise our children in the instruction of the Lord. Christians should not leave it to the world to instill its own worldview in their children. However, for parents the idea can seem overwhelming and intimidating. Where should we begin? How do we go about this? Any Christian parent can relate to these feelings. If you find yourself struggling with the “how do I do this,” there are resources to help. Don’t feel the need to reinvent the wheel. Historically, this training was done through catechesis, a series of questions and answers, designed to address doctrines of the faith.
