Heard the most disgusting remarks from a leftist yesterday, and a sign that theyre getting worse in this country: Its important to understand our racial privilege, but I feel like we dont talk enough about our national privilege and I wish more attention was paid to our gender privilege. Privilege is a collection of attitudes and perceptions, as well as institutions that are the result of unfair basis and systemic bigotry which is inherent in American history and culture. Because of racism, white people have many privileges simply by being white that other races dont have. You need to recognize how much luck gave you what you have. You didnt build it, somebody helped you. Just being born in the right County made a huge difference. You didnt earn your citizenship, that was a privilege of birth. You didnt earn being born outside the ghetto. You didnt earn being born a race that studies show employers disproportionately prefer. Plenty of people have handed you everything. You got handed this entire County by those who came before you and part of the social contract means making it better for those who got handed less. Everything that is you, comes from privilege. The very essence of us all is based on luck. Every place in America is privileged compared to many places in the world. Recognizing the benefits of privilege means we need to work to balance the scales.
