Here are some heart attack statistics from the CDC to wake us up: •Heart disease is the number one killer for both men and women •Each year 715,000 Americans have a heart attack •Almost half of all Americans (49 percent) have at least one of the top three risk factors for heart disease: high blood pressure, high LDL cholesterol, and smoking Baby Boomers and Heart Disease: The Future Is Now If you’re in your forties to early sixties and think heart attack isn’t something you need to worry about, the American Heart Association would like you to take a look at their 2013 Statistical Fact Sheet on Baby Boomers and cardiovascular disease. •Between ages 40-59: 40 percent of men and 34% of women have cardiovascular disease •Between ages 45-54: 37 percent of men and 34 percent of women have high blood pressure •Between ages 55-64: 52 percent of both men and women have high blood pressure •Between ages 45-54: Depending on race, 59 to 65 percent of men have total cholesterol over 200 mg/200dL •Between ages 45-54: Depending on race, between 63 and 69 percent of women have elevated cholesterol How to Recognize a Heart Attack Fast Now, while the danger of sudden death from heart attack is fresh in our minds, let’s review some of the lesser-known early warning signs of heart attack: •Exhaustion or extreme fatigue •Erectile dysfunction •Shortness of breath •Edema or swelling in the lower extremities •Flu-like symptoms •Unexplained insomnia •Fast heart rate or pulse Now let’s review the warning signs that a heart attack is imminent or in process: •Pain, tightness, or discomfort in the chest •Shortness of breath •Pain that radiates up or down the arms, back, shoulders, neck, or stomach (Jaw and ear pain often go overlooked) •Lightheadedness, cold sweats (clamminess), acute nausea
