Heart condition “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Eph. 4:31-32 Most people tend to measure their spiritual health by what they do for God, their faithfulness in church gatherings or their own personal sense of inner goodness. Yet none of these metrics reveal the true condition of your heart. Jesus once said that the two greatest expressions of spirituality are: love God, love God’s people. When you are healthy these two qualities are the natural expressions of your daily life. First, you love the Lord. This is far more than sentimental feelings toward a kind Heavenly Father who has you in His care. When you love God, you follow His ways. His will becomes your desire in every area of your being-your body, your soul, your relationships, your finances and your choices. When you genuinely love God, nothing is held back; sin is repented of and turned away from. When you are truly healthy you refuse to excuse disobedience in any area. Loving God is a decision to be completely God’s in everything you are, say and do with all that you have and with whomever you are with. Second, the expressions of a healthy heart are seen in how you treat others. When you truly love the One who created you, then you will absolutely, unconditionally love all God’s creations. You will forgive even when it is undeserved. You will release getting even with another who has hurt you. You will not lie about a person, gossip about them, remain angry at what they said, or disparage them in the eyes of others. You will stand beside them even when they are at their worst. You will watch what you say, how you say it and be quick to seek forgiveness when you say the wrong thing. These are the evidences of a healthy heart. Today, look deeper-are you obeying God in every area of your life? Then, listen to how you talk about others-review your reactions in dealing with those God has placed around you; plunge the scope further and carefully test the way you treat those He loves. Now, really, truly, how is your heart?
