Heart of a Warrior – “Even when I go through the darkest valley, I fear no danger, for You are with me: Your rod and Your staff they comfort me.” Psalm 23:4 I have been with FCA for 22 years as a volunteer and staff position. Having worked with student athletes and coaches for that long you see some unfortunate things like car wrecks, accidents in sports that cost a young person their life and then cancer or other sickness that takes somebody’s life. There is no amount of courage that can prepare the heart or the mind of a mother or father for the loss of a child, or for a child to lose their parent. I think the writer of this scripture, King David, knew this full well. He saw the death of his first born child to Bathsheba because of his own sinful actions, he saw the death of his best friend Jonathan, and he saw the death of one of his sons Absalom. So how can he write the words found in verse 4, “fear no danger”? Whether it is you one day going through this valley, (and one day you will), or someone you love. If we are born again of God’s Spirit, then you will not make this journey alone. David knew this, because he had walked with God like many other old testament hero’s like Moses (spoke to God as a friend), and then the list continues in the new testament as well, John (the closest of all the disciples to Christ). The truth of Psalm 23 should bring our hearts a level of peace when we think of the journey our loved ones who have passed away. They did not make this journey by themselves, they were in no danger. They traveled through this dark valley with the strongest of strongest body guards, Jesus Himself. His strength cannot be measured, His skill level for fighting and protecting cannot be challenged by anybody. He is the bad of all bad in the universe. The devil, the grave and death tried to gang up on Him, and He prevailed against all three of them. So your love ones in Christ, are secure in a new home waiting on you. That is why David said that even in death, there is comfort that comes from the Almighty, “Your rod and Your staff they comfort me”. Do you know Him? That’s the only way to be ready for this journey.
