Heartbleed Vulnerability ITS News Release - On Monday, April 7th, it was made public that the technology used to keep information such as passwords, email and credit card information private, contains a serious security vulnerability. The technology, called OpenSSL, is in widespread use on many sites, including AOL, Flickr, and the main FBI site. The vulnerability is known as “Heartbleed”, and allows hackers to gain access to private information with no detection. Quickly following the announcement of this vulnerability, our Information Security team and campus system administrators began to identify vulnerable KSU servers and took steps to fix the issues identified. KSU is taking measures to ensure the security of our systems, and we will continue to monitor them closely. For your personal use, we recommend that you refrain from engaging in online banking for a few days as well as changing passwords for sites which may have been affected. If you are unsure whether your specific banking institution/service provider/webmail host was affected, we recommend you check their website for additional information or contact their respective Service Desks. For questions or concerns, please contact the KSU Service Desk at [email protected], or call 770-423-6999.
