Heartbreaking new submission to collection on #ChinesePrivilege. Minorities, please speak up. We need more narratives like this to demonstrate ongoing racism in Singapore. When I first arrived in Singapore, my form teacher told my mother, in front of me, that he did not think there were any racial or cultural reasons for the difficulties I had fitting in. He compared me to the other new girl from China, remarking that she was fitting in well, so why couldn’t I? This was not a rhetorical question, as he went on to offer this absolute gem of a reason: he thought I wasn’t fitting in because of my “character”. Meanwhile, I was being called names for being top-heavy, and classmates directed the nastiest of insults at me. One such insult was in a chatroom specifically meant for classmates. A Chinese girl was angry at a boy in my class, and told him in the chatroom to “go suck milk from (my) breasts!” I did not understood why I, who had done nothing wrong, and was not involved in this altercation, was being used as to tool of insult.
