Heartfelt posts are more helpful when coupled with education and information that serves. The story of the Hunt family has touched me deeply. I grew up in a farming community and I am also fully aware that such an experience can happen to anyone. City or Country. So here are 3 reasons why a strong nervous system is crucial for us to exist peacefully in today’s world. If you could imagine the nervous system to be like a fiber optic cable, radiating through your entire being. It communicates with every cell in the body and it also connects with our mind. Science has yet to discover all of its capabilities however it is now evident that a strong nervous system has a significant effect on our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. 1. A strong nervous system strengthens our ability to deal with painful experiences and emotions. Shame, embarrassment, anger, fear, grief, guilt. As a collective we are so out of touch with our emotions that many of us are unable to effectively process them. However once an emotion has been triggered and comes to life within you, there is no way out of this but to feel the emotion completely and allow it to process through. This can be considered a painful experience and therefore emotions are often repressed, resulting in our minds and physical bodies becoming very unwell. A strong nervous system enables us to experience and process painful emotions efficiently and it also works on a very intimate level with the mind, strengthening our capacity ‘catch the thought’ before it triggers an unwanted emotion in the first place. 2. A strong nervous system strengthens our ability to deal with stress and adapt to life’s challenges and changes. If our inner resources are insufficient or blocked we cannot respond to stress or adapt to change in a healthy way. If our energy and strength do not match the challenges we face, our intellectual, emotional and physical well being will be affected. When we perceive a threat a strong nervous system allows for an appropriate flight or fight response from the sympathetic nervous system. This is done by maintaining a healthy balance between the sympathetic and para sympathetic nervous system and developing a strong and intimate relationship with the mind. Why is this important you ask? When the ‘flight or flight’ response has been initiated, it shifts our energy from the long term to the short term. Therefore, under threat, everything that keeps us healthy is put on the back burner to deal with the immediate challenge. The problem comes when we face continuous stress because many components of the sympathetic nervous system are actually harmful to our physical and mental well being. Studies have shown that the long-term effect of stress hormones causes growth retardation, weakens the immune system and contributes to cognitive defects. As most of you are aware, we are now existing in a stressful and fast moving pace and a sympathetic nervous system that is ON all the time is not a good thing. Period! 3. A strong nervous system helps us to not be controlled by our minds. Not all of our thoughts are positive and uplifting. The mind works in duality and even after meditating for 9 years I still observe thoughts that would be considered unhealthy. A combination of daily meditation and strengthening the nervous system has resulted in the capacity to simply observe these thoughts swimming about without identifying with them. When there is no identifying with them then there is no internal response to them. It allows me to see that there is ‘a world of me and a world of my mind’. The dark thoughts are still there however they are no longer an issue as there is the understanding that they have absolutely nothing to do with me. I am in the drivers seat, my mind is in the back seat and I choose to identify with the thoughts that allow for an expansive and uplifting experience for others and myself. A strong nervous system greatly helps with this capacity. Ok, stay tuned in tomorrow for ideas on how to strengthen this incredibly intelligent faculty within us. Enjoy the day friends and with love.
