Heat stroke toll goes up to 12 in Assam, Assam Tribune online – The hot weather conditions continued in the State as also in other parts of the North-east, with six more deaths reported from across the State today, taking the toll to twelve. In the State capital, the mercury level touched 38.4 degree Celsius (a deviation of 6 degrees) while the lowest stood at 25 degree. There seems little respite for the harrowed citizens with the Regional Meteorology Centre (RMC) predicting the trend to continue in the region for at least a couple of days. Guwahati is likely to have a maximum temperature of around 38 degree tomorrow even though chances are there for a light spell of rain, RMC said. The hot weather conditions were more or less uniform across the State. North Lakhimpur recorded the State’s highest maximum temperature with 38.9 degree. Some other major towns such as Dibrugarh, Tezpur, Jorhat, Dhubri and Silchar recorded maximum temperatures of 37.6, 37.4, 36.2, 34.7 and 38.5 degree respectively. In the Meghalaya capital Shillong, the maximum temperature touched 25.9 degree Celsius while the lowest was 17.9 degree. Even more than the scorching heat, it was the erratic power supply that hit the people harder. There were several power-cuts in the city during the day and also at night. As for other parts of the State, prolonged power-cuts extending into hours made life unbearable for the people. In the city, most schools barring a few remained closed today following the district administration’s directive to the effect. The administration had ordered closure of schools in Kamrup (Metro) district on June 13 and 14 in view of the extreme weather conditions. With a spurt in heat strokes and heat-related diseases, doctors have advised the people to take adequate precautions such as staying away from direct sunlight, wearing light and comfortable cotton outfits, and eating a lot of water, fruit and fruit juice. In the city, roads and streets were without the usual crowd of people as well as the normal vehicular traffic, as many chose to remain confined to the comfort of indoors. Those who had no option but to venture out tried to beat the heat with cold drinks, coconut water and ice cream. RMC sources attributed the hot weather conditions to a cyclonic circulation lying over North-West Bay and neighbourhood and preventing flow of moisture-laden air from the Bay to the North-east. The North-West Bay development has been sending out a dry easterly wind to the NE region.
