Heavy rain in northern Pakistan and India has caused severe floods, affecting tens of thousands of people. We’re on the ground in both countries, identifying how we can contribute effectively to the relief effort as soon as possible. “Our team in Pakistan were able to initiate an immediate response thanks to the ‘ready to respond’ disaster preparedness project funded by Islamic Relief UK,” says Mohammed Afsar from our humanitarian department. We are preparing to deliver 250 winterised tents, 250 kitchen sets and solar lamps to families who have lost their houses in Haveli, an area thatis home to around 20,000 people,as the first phase of our response. The Government of India has declared the emergency a ‘national calamity’ and has allocated Rs100 million towards relief efforts. Our crisis response team and other aid agencies are awaiting permission from the authorities to travel to Srinagar after the initial ‘search and rescue’ phase is completed.
