Hebrew, as far as I know, is the only language ever to have been resuscitated from being a basically dead language used only in prayer. Eliezer Ben Yehudah accomplished this almost single-handedly. To appreciate the significance, imagine a revival of Latin as a spoken language used in the street. I believe there are now about 10 million Hebrew speakers around the world, most of them in Israel, and probably one third to half of them speaking it as a first language.
