Hebrews 1:3 says, “The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and He sustains everything by the mighty power of His command.” That word everything means everything. As in, every molecule of matter and energy in the known universe. It means He sustains the Milky Way, the Sun, the Earth, and your very body by the power of His command. In other words, nothing happens without God noticing, because in order for something to happen in the first place, He has to sustain it with His active, mighty, all-present, all-powerful command. Now, when you hear there is an all-seeing, all-knowing, all-powerful God that sustains us with His power, the next question is: is He good? If God sustains everything, why aren’t things better? Every day we face challenging things, and often when things don’t seem like they get better, we wonder where God is in it all and if He is in control, if He is good? Well, in Hebrews 1:3 we read that, “the son expresses the very character of God.” That word character can literally mean ‘impression, like the way they made coins. It made exact representations with value backed up by the ultimate authority. This means if we want to know what God is like, we look at Jesus. He is stamped with Gods image. And what do we see? Someone who forgives, heals, patiently teaches. Someone who loves untouchable, unclean people. Someone who humbly gave up everything for people who rejected him, forgave people as they were killing him, and someone who overcame death to pay the price of our sins and make a way back to God. Put them together and what do you have? The mighty power that sustains the universe is now available to you for healing and teaching. The hand that guides the planet can now guide you. The Lord that sustains everything has bowed low to sustain you, not out of control or manipulation, but out of pure love. Because thats who God is.
