Hebrews 12:1 speaks of the race that is set before us. There is a particular race set before each one of us that is our race and our race alone to run. It is that thing for which God created us, designed us, equipped us and armed us. In order for us to win that race we have to take it seriously. That means we must make it a primary focus in our lives. As with an Olympian, we must give ourselves to training which involves laying aside anything that is going to impede our progress. The passage states, Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We have weights and sins to deal with if we are to succeed. The word for weight could be translated a bulging mass. A bulging mass is something that grows larger and larger until it takes over our lives and even weighs us down. When we look at the use of our resources (time, talent and treasure) it is the area that seems to take most of them to feed it. The word for sin is the Greek word which means to miss the mark. It can apply to individual sins or it can apply to simply not hitting the target that God has prescribed for us. This means in that in the race that we are running we most be able to focus. We must unload or unravel the heavy mass that is dominating our life, we must lay aside things that are not consistent with Gods plan and we must move forward with a single focus. It has to do with making Gods will and purpose the main thing in my life. When I get up in the morning, it is the main thing. When I interact with my family, it is the main thing. When I go off to work, it is the main thing, When I interact with the people that I meet, it is the main thing. When I choose how to spend my time, talents and treasures, Gods purpose is the main thing.
