Height of rider and height of horse, a discussion. Im 61, about 155, and Roxie, the mare in these photos taken this afternoon, is at right about 15 hands. Ive ridden 17 hand horses, like Epic Win, and shorter horses than Roxie, like the 14.1 Arabian, Zion, that I rode on my first one day 100 mile endurance race, and Ive ridden every size in between. My take, and I realize this is TOTALLY a matter of personal preference, is that size matters far less than many riders think. I feel just as at home on the little ones as on the big ones, but I grew up with Morgans, so I wasnt indoctrinated at a young age with the bigger is better doctrine. I think many well made, well balanced small horses can handle weight better than many taller horses that are less well constructed. But you have to do what feels right to you. Nobody else rides for you, and you shouldnt be brow beaten into riding a certain size, up OR down, because others say you should or shouldnt.
