Heinrich Schütz (1585–1672) Il libro primo de Madrigali Schütz is remembered almost entirely as a composer of sacred music, but his output was more diverse than this reputation suggests. He composed several operas – including Dafne, the first ever written in German – and though none of these have survived, we do have his Opus 1, a remarkable book of secular madrigals, Il libro primo de Madrigali. Completed by 1611, after Schütz’s period with Gabrieli, the nineteen pieces in the collection display an effortless compositional virtuosity and demonstrate the young Schütz’s masterful command of this most Italian of genres. His sensitive word setting is in evidence even at this early stage, such as in the eighth madrigal, where the darting sprightly setting of “Fucci o mio core” (Flee, O my heart) finally gives way to a sighing mournful expression of “Ma lasso, ecco un sospir nunzio infelice“ (But alas, behold a sigh, unhappy messenger”.
