Heiress of ex-Gapan politician faces tax evasion charges (7/15/2013) The heiress of old-time Gapan City politician and businessman Martiniano Abad was charged with tax evasion by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) for alleged non-payment of estate taxes totaling more than P129 million. In a criminal complaint filed with the justice department, BIR Commissioner Kim Jacinto-Henares identified the respondent as Mary Anne Abad of Gilmore St., New Manila, Quezon City. Also charged was her lawyer, Antolin Oliva, for allegedly assisting her in evading the payment of taxes. The alleged tax-evasion scheme was uncovered by the Quezon City revenue region which received confidential information that Martiniano Abad, his wife Remedios and sole legal heir Myrna Abad, all died without their attory-in-fact, Mary Anne Abad, filing the estate tax returns. The deceased owned several commercial and residential properties in Quezon City, Manila, Makati, Laguna and Nueva Ecija worth more than P382 million. Henares said the accused, with the help of her lawyer, was able to consolidate all the properties in favor of Abad Royal Estate, Inc. (AREI). "With both the majority shareholders Martiniano and Remedios dead, Mary Anne had the controlling shares and exercised effective owner-like rights to the real properties of AREI," said Henares. She said Myrna died intestate or without a will in June 2011. ###
