Helen Keller was someone whose lightness of spirit, even in the midst of grief, seemed to drive out darkness. People who overcome darkness are amazing and to be honest a bit frightening to me. The physical triumphs are powerful and amazing, but I mean people who conquer darkness of spirit .... you know, the ones who would never call down fire from heaven, but if they did, it would be because it was RIGHT. People beautiful like the sun before whose blazing core no one wants to be laid bare. Helen Keller wrote this letter to Nazi students upon hearing they burned her books. There is no levity here, but there is fire. She acknowledges their suffering without excusing their barbarity. What a fine example of rising up against the storm, of fighting the darkness without becoming darkness. THIS is turning over the tables in the temple.
