Helen Lambin was feeling down about aging when she turned 75. She lost her husband a decade earlier and was despondent. On a whim, she got her first ever tattoo; a small peace daisy. Soon afterward, she got a baby dolphin, and then a mother dolphin. Strangers began to talk to her on the street. Young people would shout, “Nice Ink!” That was 5 years ago. Today she’s 80 and this retired executive has over 50 tattoos. She only gets tattoos that are colorful and non-offensive and believes they form a connection that reaches across age, gender, race and cultural borders. Helen is no longer despondent about aging and feels reconnected to the culture around her. She’s taking harmonica lessons and learning Spanish. It’s amazing what can happen you take a chance; when you get involved instead of withdrawing.
