Helen lucille Laas wrote: We forget that in biblical times people were married in their teens, up until modern medicine came up with antibiotics and vaccines, old age was between 40 and 60. People seldom lived to the ages we do now, and girls were married off young and uneducated. It has been shown that for every additional year of education that a woman has her child has a better chance of survival and success. With the uncertainty of our society, women cannot allow themselves to be in a position where they are unable to take care of themselves, they cannot be wholly dependent on men to take care of them as they can never be sure that that man will always be there, or be employed. Women need to be educated, empowered to be in control of their bodies, and be able to take care of themselves and their families as the need arises. Teenage pregnancy, unfortunately, often prevents a girl from pursuing her education and traps girls in the poverty cycle. We need strong men in our communities who are prepared to stand up and encourage girls to study to escape going through what their mothers have suffered for generations.
