Hello All, Although there’s obviously no school tomorrow, we thought we’d post our forecast anyway given that there is growing number of members who would like to know about the possibility of bad road conditions and when and when not to traverse the hilly roads of southwestern Connecticut. Winter storm Iola is currently spanning from Texas to Pennsylvania and is quickly approaching coastal New England. By midnight, the storm will traverse over the D.C. area. The temperature will drop to the upper 20s with light breeze from the southwest (wind chill mid twenties). By 5 AM we can expect SNOW that will last until mid-morning with VERY HIGH humidity (no evaporation). At this point, the jet stream will shift to the east bringing ever-so-slightly warmer high altitude air over southern Connecticut. As a result, the precipitation will transition to a WINTRY MIX of RAIN AND SNOW around 6/7am and will form back into HEAVY SNOWFALL by 10 AM (just in time for those of you who are sleeping in because of the postponed SAT…). Snow will continue to precipitate until early noon as the jet stream moves further inland warming the storm to a RAIN/SNOW mix. By 3 PM maritime polar air all the way from western Canada will take precedence transitioning the precipitation YET AGAIN BACK TO SNOW that will fall until perhaps 7 or 8 PM. Aside from the precipitation, the temperature will mainly hover in the lower thirties yet will spike to the 34/35 range explaining the periods of RAIN. We predict SIX INCHES of total ICE AND SNOW accumulation over the 19 hour period. Areas of Ridgefield WILL have patches of SIGNIFICANT ICING on unsalted roads and sidewalks. As a result, the National Weather Service has issued a WINTER STORM WARNING for “...HEAVY WET SNOW” This being said we conclude that tomorrow’s weather will pose TREACHEROUS TRAVEL AND ROAD CONDITIONS due to a mix of HEAVY SNOW, SLEET, AND ICE! Tree limbs and POWER LINES COULD FALL (charge your devices?). ONLY TRAVEL IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY, especially during the worst of the storm (from 5 AM - NOON). If one must travel, “...keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle”(National Weather Service). We’ll keep you updated regarding Monday. R.H.S.W.S.
