Hello Dancers- longest status ever….. Happy Show Day!!! I don’t think I could truly express just how excited, proud, inspired, humbled, happy, and stoked I am for YOU and your upcoming performance (s)!!! It’s such an honor to be able to stand to the side and watch all your hard work from this past year pay off as you step on that stage, take that chance, show your true self, and dance. This may seem like a long note, but I feel it’s a truly important one. These following items are very important for you, for today, for performing, and I feel they transfer into your life as well (whether you continue to dance/perform or choose another path) • Tech rehearsals: “Why do we need to rehearse….we were just here?” In my brief stint as a professional dancer, these words were NEVER uttered from any dancer I know. And in speaking with current professionals, they too know the importance of the rehearsal. This is an opportunity to get back on the stage and truly work towards making your dance the best that you can possibly make it. Why wouldn’t you want that chance? And those technicians…..in the lighting booth, sound, backstage….do you think they just sit there and watch?? Do you know the amount of work that they put in to make your 3-5 minute performance AMAZING??? Sound cues…making sure you are ready, and then music goes…is it loud enough…can you hear it on the stage????? Did they fade out at right spot…did they pause if required?? And lighting----can you be seen onstage by your family, friends and loved ones??? Is that spotlight hitting the stage at exactly the correct time and in the correct area?? Are the lights onstage for you as you enter?? Or do the wait for you to enter and then boom…you’re there…seen!! Those techs backstage….making sure you are ok? Ready to go? Do you need water? Do you need floor swept? Ice pack?? You go onstage for 5 minutes….they are there ALL DAY…. 730am to 1015pm on Thursday. Friday a minimum of 12hrs. Saturday… I don’t even know….. THEY are there to help YOU, making this experience positive, comfortable, memorable, inspiring…. Do you hear them complaining….ever?!?!? Nope. So, Rule 1- say THANK YOU. And truly believe it. • Backstage Etiquette I LOVE that you LOVE cheering for each other and I will never stop that. I am so proud of that, as a studio, that we support our own. When you see a dancer struggling, you show them LOVE; tell them they can do it. That’s what we do If you see someone looking stressed, ask him or her, how can I help?? Noise Levels- Between pieces, it’s quiet. This means NO TALKING. This means, you need to be a SMART dancer and know when it’s ok to cheer, and when you need to SHUT UP. If you want to see another side of me, just talk and be stupid when it’s quite or inappropriate…I am sure you will enjoy it. • GUM- Yeah, I know I chew gum…everyone knows that. YOU, the dancer, MAY NOT EVER chew gum in the backstage area OR on stage…EVER. When I look at you angry because I see you have gum, you best run and get it out of your mouth and into a garbage can as fast as your legs will carry you. I will remind you again, my CPR is terrible, you choke, and you die. • Cell Phones Yes, I know how important they are….I mean you post on Facebook and then got to check back 100 times to see how many people now like your post….it really shows who your true friends are…… Do NOT bring them into the stage area…..they stay in dressing rooms in your bags…. And if you do not have somewhere safe, you find me backstage and ask me to store it for you. Period. • Dress Rooms When I enter a messy room, see a few people in it and express that it needs to be cleaned. Please, tell me “it’s not my mess” or “I don’t want to” or better yet roll. Your. Eyes. See how much fun I am now….. This is a beautiful space we have the privilege of using. Have some respect. You see garbage, you pick it up. It takes about 10 seconds….wow….so much time taken from your day. You spill a drink, clean it up. You spray crap on mirror, wipe it off. RESPECT. • Stage Area The curtains might look like fun things to swing on…they are not. They cost a lot of money Stay within the BLUE LINES. It’s easy. Open your eyes. If you would like to run into the scrim at the back of the stage, please go ahead. And then ask your parents for a couple hundred thousand dollars to replace it….. CLEAN INDOOR SHOES on stage at ALL TIMES…… • Appropriate Wear This is an ALL AGES SHOW. Did you know my very own lovely father and brother run tech backstage. Did you know someone’s grandpa, uncle Billy bob, cousin Helen, Aunt Miranda, nephew Sam are ALL WATCHING YOU. I don’t know about you guys, but I prefer to come out dressed in something they respect….. If I tell you that you need to cover up, do it. As dancers especially, you need to learn there is a time and a place. You may pursue professional careers, and be required to wear minimal clothing. That is totally ok. Know your audience. Know what the goal and focus is. Vibe year end show is a family, fun filled show. Not a night club. I truly do appreciate you and am so blessed to have you all in my life and studio family. I also appreciate you taking the time to hopefully read this thru.
