Hello Everyone, Over the last few days I have been seeing a big of paranoia regarding the Facebook app and its permissions. I see a lot of people sharing misleading and fear mongering pages that give incorrect information about what the Facebook Messenger app does. Permissions are essential to the applications functionality and are not used to spy on you. For instance, it has access to your microphone because it has a voice chat feature. If the operating system was not able to grant the application that permission you would not be able to use voice chat. This doesnt mean that it can just pick and choose when to record you. You can access your camera directly from the application to send a quick picture or video. Another feature of your phone that has to be granted permission. This does not mean that your phone can just take pictures or videos of you without permission. That would be a blatant invasion of privacy and a multi million dollar lawsuit. It has access to your contacts because you can dial real numbers and send messages to real numbers if you choose to. (In the beginning of the install of the app it asks you if you want to use your number to be able to send messages) These articles are written by people trying to mislead people, probably because they are butthurt that they have to download the messenger. Also, they are probably butthurt because they have have no memory on their sorry phones.
