Hello Everyone, UVSA wants to send a reminder to everyone about todays City of Irvine City Council Meeting. The information is as follows: Location: City of Irvine, City Hall - 1 Civic Center Plaza, Irvine, CA 92606 (Harvard & Alton intersection) Time: Meeting to begin at 4 (please arrive between 3-3:30 to sign up for public comments) Reason: To raise concern about the potential sister-city relationship between Irvine and Nha Trang & the hanging of the communist flag in Irvine We strongly encourage everyone to attend this meeting to show our strength in numbers as well as raise concerns about the impact the city will create on Vietnamese-Americans who left their homeland to seek freedom and those who fought for the idea of freedom. Please see below for the letter we sent to the City of Irvine City Council: Dear Honorable Mayor Choi and Councilmembers, The Union of the Vietnamese Student Associations Southern California (UVSA) is writing to urge you to reconsider discussions of having Nha Trang as a sister city to Irvine. On behalf of the Vietnamese-American student population in Southern California, UVSA is raising the concern about the proposed relationship between Irvine and Nha Trang because of the message that it may bring to the Vietnamese-Americans who are vehemently opposed to the Communist regime in our home country. As you may know, Orange County, and more specifically Little Saigon, is home to over 200,000 Vietnamese refugees who left Vietnam to seek freedom from the unjust leadership of communists. These refugees are represented by the Vietnamese heritage flag, which contains three red stripes on a yellow background. The three stripes represent the three regions of Viet Nam and the yellow background represents the color of our skin. Establishing a sister-city relationship with Nha Trang and hanging the Communist flag would be an insult not only to the Vietnamese-American people in Orange County, but also to all Vietnamese-Americans in the United States and abroad who have fought and died for the idea of freedom and democracy for all. For over 30 years, our organization has strived to develop the next generation of young leaders through cultural awareness, civic engagement, education, social issues, and reminding them of the value of freedom and democracy through our events, especially the endless opportunities this wonderful nation has given to all of us. We hope that leaders like you can continue to be role models for us youth to look upon and be champions for human rights so that we can take the lead in changing lives, one step at a time. Once again, we urge you to consider the impact this will have on your constituents and the Vietnamese-Americans here and abroad. Respectfully yours,
