Hello Everyone! Yesterday was the last day of SIGGRAPH 2014 in - TopicsExpress

Hello Everyone! Yesterday was the last day of SIGGRAPH 2014 in Vancouver! and I just wanted to share some experiences and thoughts about it if anyone was interested. First of all, it was just purely amazing! I believe that everyone should try to go and I really recommend applying for the SV (Student Volunteer) program for next year which will be held in Los Angeles (aug 9th- 13th). Even if you dont go as an SV it would be worth spending the money for. As an SV we got quite a few perks, one of which was getting a full conference pass which meant we could go anywhere and see anything we wanted! We had special sessions, Blue Sky, Sony Imageworks, Dreamworks, Autodesk, and others came to talk to just our group. There were professional reel reviews available, Both Blue Sky and Disney held reel reviews that we could go to. And of course all these groups handed out some cool free stuff. (I will post a picture soon of all the free stuff I got while here.. and yes I got a Renderman teapot :) ). You meet people from all over the world who are interested in the same things you are and have similar goals. Even around the convention center, at the job fair, on the exhibition floor and after certain events we got some cool stuff. There are industry people from around the world and from every company you could hope for just walking around and attending events and parties that you go to. There are just plenty of opportunities to network and explore and learn. ETech ( Emerging Technologies ) was pretty mind blowing, the things that people come up with. and you get to interact or test out all these things! I tried out this flying bird simulator, where you have the Oculus Rift on and are on this bird shaped machine and it puts you into this virtual reality of flying like a bird! you flap your wings and everything. it was pretty amazing. Also tried out the this booth that also used the Oculus Rift and this weird sock like shoes and a harness that totally immerses you in the game. You can walk and duck and turn 360 degrees and turn your head and just be inside the game. that was pretty incredible. They had a lot of Talks about how they did certain things in films or creating these devices or anything you could want to know about any field! Also another big thing I really enjoyed was the Animation festivals Electronic theater. We got a to watch a free screening of How to train your dragon 2 in 3D and could ask the creators questions about it at the end if we wanted to. Then we got to see breakdowns of how certain shots were created in the big movies that came out. We watched many animated shorts that were amazing and pulled on your heart strings. We also got first look of Disneys new short that wont be released until november when Big Hero 6 comes out ( I believe ). The whole experience was just mind blowing! Met a lot of new people, added new contacts to my LinkedIn, passed out business cards, collected business cards, talked to recruiters, talked to people in the industry. Just so much was crammed into 5 days. The only down side I think there is, is that you dont have enough time to see everything that you would want, especially as a volunteer because there is just so much. I could keep writing but I dont want to write a novel here. If you have any questions though feel free to ask! Also wanted to share a link, it kinda gives you a little view of what was there. s2014.siggraph.org/attendees/siggraph-2014-video-previews
