Hello Facebook People, I want to get serious for once (only once I promise), The story tonight on Lewis Kearney gutted me and while Im sure he will be flooded with donations in the short term, there are a ton of others in the same boat who will be overlooked. Sure we donate non-perishables, but we seem to overlook the perishables. This fellow just wanted a pork chop or some eggs. Surely this is not an unreasonable desire. Food banks have trouble storing perishables for obvious reasons (impermanence of product, facilities, etc...) but I have a weird idea. Have you ever heard of a reserved coffee? Essentially coffee shops in some larger cities allow you to buy a coffee for yourself and buy another on reserve. Those less fortunate can come to the shop and acquire a coffee at no cost to them as its paid for. You see where I am going with this. Why cant we do the same for proteins. Some of us could afford a $5 or $10 extra charge on our groceries couldnt we? Maybe not every time, but whenever possible. Of course its not feasible to walk into a grocery store and ask for reserved pork chops, but if we could get the supermarkets on board (Ill be looking to Colemans and Bidgoods first) for the minor administrative functions and the St. Johns food bank network to distribute coupons/vouchers that represent these reserved proteins... couldnt we solve the storage and perishability issues by allowing those less fortunate to pick out a roast, a chicken or some eggs fresh from the grocers shelves with these reserved coupons? Sure, there are some logistical issues to figure out, but no real tough obstacles. Of course it cant work unless it gets some traction. Lets call it #reservearoast. Come on, were Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, we can do this. If you missed this story, I have attached it below...
