Hello, I am somewhat new to this page but have been trying to help - TopicsExpress

Hello, I am somewhat new to this page but have been trying to help where I can. I ask that you do not judge me on this post. I am asking for help because I know we need it. I have two beautiful furbabies that I need some help with. This site has really opened my eyes about how dangerous my girls behavior is. The problem is that they bolt. If a front door is open or the garage door is open for even a moment without a human (who knows to stop them) in the way, they take off. They are both big girls (our oldest is Takoda, a lab/shepherd/greyhound mix, 95 pounds and is 8 years old and our youngest is Ruby Roo, a lab/pit mix, 75 pounds and is going to be 3 in March). Their size makes people very nervous and worried when they get out –which is understandable. I’m just afraid that someone will hurt them because they are afraid of them or that they will end up running onto a busy street. (We live off 19th Ave in Everett behind Prince of Peach church) So far, they’ve stayed close and only run around the neighbors’ homes and then will come home. The big problem is: I have two human daughters also. They leave the doors open. They play at their friend’s house; they go to the school - which is 6 houses down. Only one time have the dogs gotten out when the girls were not home and they followed her scent to the school then ran when we tried to get her back home. I am terrified (especially after the recent events on the site) that something will happen to my fur-girls. I need help. They have both been through basic obedience training and know they should not leave the yard. I feel part of the reason that they do run when they can is I have a very difficult time with them on the leash and they are not walked as often as they should be. I love my dogs and I try to be a responsible pet owner. I would have more if we could afford it. But it’s become a vicious circle of them running because they are not walked often and them not getting walked as often as they should because they run (even on the leash). We do have a large fenced back yard but it’s not the same. The reason I am writing this extremely long post is because I have seen on this site before someone who does “stay training”. I need my girls to learn not to bolt. I also need help with learning how to handle them on a leash so they don’t feel like they have to bolt. They are very strong and intimidate people and dogs alike. To add to this, our youngest is anxious around people and very nervous. If she got out and lost her sister, no one would be able to get near her. I cannot afford the fancy, expensive training facilities. Does anyone have suggestions on a person or place that can help us keep our girls safe and healthy for a reasonable price? If this is not appropriate to post here, please let me know and I will delete. Thank you.
