Hello, Im a bit of a (complete) layman when it comes to physics, - TopicsExpress

Hello, Im a bit of a (complete) layman when it comes to physics, but I do have a huge passion for it. I just wondered if any of you could answer a question I have. I watched a documentary on the BBC this week called Human Universe which talked about how subtle variations in the laws of physics would completely change the make-up of the universe. I understood most of it, but could not fathom what was meant when it said that if the speed of light were slower, or faster, then the universe would be unable to form elements such as carbon or oxygen. I tweeted the presenter, Professor Brian Cox and he kindly replied with three words: Fine Structure Constant. This was a great starting point, but Ive been scouring the internet all morning and have been unable to find a simple explanation. Can anyone give me the broad-strokes explanation? :)
