Hello! Im a new plant, uh, lets say experimenter. I am mostly interested in growing avocado plants (for the growing of them, not the difficult-and-not-tasty fruiting of home avocado plants.) Currently, I have a weird situation that the internet has no idea what to do with. * I have 1 plant growing since August 2013 * 2 plants growing since September 2013 * 1 plant growing since July 2014 The July 2014 plant is doing fine in its water. .....and so are the other 3. Well, mostly. Id REALLY like to figure out if theres ways to keep these plantbabies growing in just water--again, Im experimenting. The fact that those 3 are almost a year and a half old each has me curious if theyve adapted to their environment some? I would be very interested, though, in figuring out how to possibly put these older plants into soil. Im nervous, because in July 2014, I lost the August 2013s two sister plants--the first from some kind of slime on the root and then a blackening of the seed; and when the second started to go this way, I tried to slowly introduce soil to its water, but it just wouldnt take and eventually died. :( So... What are your thoughts? * Am I crazy to even try continuing to grow these plants in just water? * Are there nutrients I can add to the water to help extend this experiment? * Should I put rocks in the water to held give the roots more to hang onto? * What should I do for the 2013 plants to help them not suffocate if I have to introduce soil? Should it be mud, or water that I add a little soil to each day? * What is that slime that grows on the roots some times? It is gray and filmy and doesnt just rinse off. * If the seed goes black, is that a disease or simply the nutrients running out? Thank you for all your in put! ^_^
